Another ATV accident sends kids to hospital - 3 July 2010

FORT NELSON, B.C. – An accident described by RCMP as horrific has left two 17-year-old riding an ATV in critical condition after the machine crashed with a flatbed truck.
The crash occurred while a 17-year-old was driving a Yamaha 350 ATV south on 50th Avenue in Fort Nelson on Saturday.
“A number of witnesses indicate the quad was travelling at high speed, as it passed them on the road. The ATV then appears to have attempted to negotiate the curve in the roadway, which leads to a stop sign with the intersection with Hwy #97,” said Cpl. Dean Klubi.
“A Ford F-550 flat deck truck was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection, waiting to enter onto the highway. The ATV collided with the Ford F550 in what appears to have been very close to a perpendicular impact. The ATV proceeded under the Ford F550, making contact and sliding along the undercarriage, before coming to rest. Neither occupants on the ATV were wearing helmets,” said Klubi.
“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision,” he said.
The teenaged male driver is in critical condition with heads injuries, fractured pelvis and internal bleeding. He was flown to Edmonton for further treatment.
A girl who was on the ATV remains in serious condition with a badly fractured arm, fractured pelvis and internal bleeding. She was also flown to an out of town hospital.
RCMP Inspector Brewer said, “This horrific crash is a grim reminder that the operation of these off-road vehicles on public streets is extremely dangerous.”
“That, coupled with the lack of safety equipment, such as helmets, would be contributing factors to the injuries suffered by these two young people. Parents and residents of the community need to be vigilant in ensuring their vehicles are operated in areas designed for these types of vehicles and that all available safety gear be worn to mitigate any possible injuries should the vehicle collide with an object or rollover. These types of incidents are completely preventable and unnecessary, as these vehicles have no place on city streets.”
Police are looking for any additional witnesses to the accident.
Between 5 & 6pm today, an ATV carrying two individuals collided with an Irly work truck that was waiting to pull out on the Alaska Highway. The ATV was east bound on the frontage road just in front of the Woodlands Inn Hotel. The two persons were transported to hospital with undetermined injuries and police are not commenting at this time. Update 4 July 2010: unconfirmed reports suggest that both of the young ATV riders were medivaced to Edmonton last evening.
Update 5:30pm on 4 July 2010: RCMP confirm that the two young individuals operating the ATV were sent to larger medical facilities. The young lady on the back of the machine is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries while the male driver is being treated for life threatening injuries. RCMP confirm that excessive speed and alcohol are contributing factors to this incident.

Energy in Action - Media Release 17 May 2010
Taking the classroom outdoors to “Engage, Connect and Inspire!” is the theme behind this year’s Energy in Action 2010 program. This annual initiative lead by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and a team of committed oil and gas companies brings together industry professionals with students in eight rural operating communities to talk about petroleum, responsible resource development and the importance of preserving our natural environment. Then the students will put their new knowledge to work by rolling up their sleeves and planting trees, vegetables and flowers, building bird houses and creating greener outdoor environments where they can learn and play.
“Kids are very enthusiastic about learning if they can get involved and use their hands,” says Tom Huffaker, CAPP’s Vice President, Policy and Environment. “By bringing the classroom into nature, Energy in Action demonstrates CAPP’s commitment to sustainable resource development and the students learn how to become good stewards of their local environments.”
CAPP will deliver Energy in Action 2010 to Fort Nelson on May 18th, reaching 45 children. The grades three and four students at J.S. Measles cases confirmed in Northeast BC
A number of people across the province have recently been diagnosed with the disease. The laboratory-confirmed cases in Northeastern BC represent the first measles cases the North has seen in several years.
Measles is very contagious and can be a severe illness in those lacking previous exposure to the disease or without adequate immunizations. Children and adults who have had two doses of measles vaccine (MMR) are immune, as are those born before 1957 who very likely had childhood measles.
Northern Health is encouraging individuals born after 1956, who haven’t ever had a measles infection, or who do not recall or have documentation of receiving two doses of measles vaccine (or MMR), to contact their doctor or nearest public health unit to arrange to be vaccinated. Depending on demand for the vaccine, Northern Health may arrange immunization clinics in some communities.
Health care providers are reminded that measles is a reportable condition which requires immediate notification to public health. Physicians should be alert to measles if they see kids or adults with a rash, fever, cough and sore eyes.
Northern Health and the BC Centre for Disease Control recommend the following to anyone who suspects they may have measles:
Call your physician or care provider in the event of a red blotchy rash that starts on the head, neck and shoulders and spreads to the rest of the body
Call ahead before going to a doctor’s office or walk-in clinic to allow for precautions to be taken for preventing the spread of the measles virus to staff and/or other patients.
Similar precautions should be taken for any hospital or emergency room visits
All suspected measles cases should be reported to Public Health immediately, usually by an attending physician.
Northern Rockies Regional Council approves bylaws 21 & 22
Approximately 40 observers at the town council meeting held at 6:30pm on April 12, 2010 witnessed council give 3rd and final reading to the Business License and Regulation Bylaw #21-Business license Bylaw & Bylaw 22-Zoning Amendment regarding Adult oriented businesses. Once approved by MOT, the changes give the municipality regulatory and zoning authority over Escort and adult oriented businesses.
Energy FM will remain neutral in "Escort" debate - Press Release 2 April 2010.
Fort Nelson's local radio station will not get involved in the moral debate over the licensing of Escort related businesses in the municipality. Sources reveal that the station had tentatively set a date for an on-air interview with Professor Benjamin Perin of the University of British Columbia to take place on Tuesday April 6th, 2010. That interview has since been postponed. Ken Johnson who is station manager says the interview was dependant on one factor.,"I made it perfectly clear to the professor and to a reporter from the Fort Nelson News, that I would air an interview on the subject provided that all view points were represented. This did not come to be. The Mayor and council declined to participate and therefore, the interview is cancelled for now."
When asked for a position on the subject, Mr Johnson said.,"The station has no position." He added.,"It is certainly the opposition to a business such as this that is barking the loudest. I will not be pressured into doing anything by those on either side of the debate. There will be no radio interview until I feel comfortable that the radio station does not appear to be one-sided as a result."
Mr. Johnson says he is open to doing the interview if all the players can be put in place.

Tuesday March 9, 2010 - F.N. Climate Action Plan
Synopsis of Climate Action Plan Process:
What is the Climate Action Plan?
The NRRM has joined a growing number of municipalities that are committed to reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is working to meet the objectives set out by the Provincial Government. Local governments are required to institute greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, actions, and policies in the Official Community Plan by May of 2010. The Climate Action Plan will identify the best ways for NRRM to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions. The Climate Action Team will be working over the next several weeks to develop scenarios of different actions the community can take to reduce local emissions.
The Public Design Event will be held on the evening of March 23 between 6:30 and 9:00 pm at the Woodlands Inn. The evening will include a presentation by the Project Team of different scenarios that the community can choose to reduce greenhouse gases. After the technical presentation, the room will be divided into working groups and there will be opportunity for the public to learn more about each scenario; ask questions of the Project Team; and be part of the decision process for Fort Nelson’s Climate Action Plan. The purpose is to design the ideal Climate Action together at the Design Event. We welcome your participation and look forward to meeting you and working together. RCMP MEDIA RELEASE
ALBERTA - On January 15, 2010 at approximately 7:30 am, Fox Creek RCMP responded to a call involving a tractor-trailer unit that had rolled over while heading eastbound on Simonette Road near Little Smoky, Alberta.
RCMP located the collison scene 60 kilometers west of Highway 43. Investigators believe the driver of the semi was trying to negotiate a turn but was too wide in his approach. As the driver was turning, the middle of his vehicle hit the bridge's side rail causing the vehicle to ride up on the side rail for approximately 15 meters until the vehicle toppled over onto the cab.
The cab portion of the tractor unit was crushed by the weight resulting in the death of the driver.
The identity of the driver, a 42-year-old man from Sylvan Lake, is not being released at this time.
Investigators are asking for anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact Fox Creek RCMP at 780-622-3580

The Olympic Torch Relay Event will take place at Art Fraser Park, on February 1, 2010, from 8:00 am. Following the official ceremonies, there will be a community Winter Spirit Carnival, with refreshments, activities, and entertainment, until 11:00 a.m. The official Olympic Torch Route will be published the week leading up to the event, so that people may gather along the route to support the Torchbearers during their portion.
