Tuesday March 9, 2010 - F.N. Climate Action Plan
Synopsis of Climate Action Plan Process:
What is the Climate Action Plan?
The NRRM has joined a growing number of municipalities that are committed to reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is working to meet the objectives set out by the Provincial Government. Local governments are required to institute greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, actions, and policies in the Official Community Plan by May of 2010. The Climate Action Plan will identify the best ways for NRRM to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions. The Climate Action Team will be working over the next several weeks to develop scenarios of different actions the community can take to reduce local emissions.
The Public Design Event will be held on the evening of March 23 between 6:30 and 9:00 pm at the Woodlands Inn. The evening will include a presentation by the Project Team of different scenarios that the community can choose to reduce greenhouse gases. After the technical presentation, the room will be divided into working groups and there will be opportunity for the public to learn more about each scenario; ask questions of the Project Team; and be part of the decision process for Fort Nelson’s Climate Action Plan. The purpose is to design the ideal Climate Action together at the Design Event. We welcome your participation and look forward to meeting you and working together. Wednesday March 3, 2010 - Bantam Rep Hockey team to Finals
When hockey got started back at the end of October 2009, the Bantam Rep team set a goal to make it to Tier 4 Provincial Championships representing the Northeast District. The team of 14 dedicated players traveled from tournament to tournament setting their hopes high while playing the game they love. They Practiced and played hard in order to get themselves one step closer to achieving their goal. The team traveled to Peace River in November for their opening tournament and playing not bad as a team they won 1 game and lost 2. The next tournament took the team to Fort St. John in December. They played in a hard fought battle against Dawson Creek, coming in fourth in a game that could have easily gone the other way and placed them in third. January, was the start of a 3 weekend tournament schedule for the Fury Team. The first weekend, our team hosted the first Bantam Rep tournament in Fort Nelson in many years, and was very successful. The team ended up beating Fort St. John in a very exciting final game and won our home tournament. This tournament win was the first Rep tournament a Fort Nelson Team had won in a very long time. Our players played well and they should be proud. It was also the first game of our Provincial play down two game series with Chetwynd, to see which team would represent the Northeast District at Provincial Championships. Fort Nelson was victorious over Chetwynd in the first game winning 6 – 3. It was great to see this caliber hockey in Fort Nelson again, and it was great to see the large crowd of enthusiastic Fort Nelson hockey fans down at the arena, supporting their home team. The very next weekend the Bantam Rep Team traveled to Grande Prairie for their tournament. We played 4 games and played well but ended up with a fourth place finish. Then for the third weekend in a row our team traveled to Dawson Creek, again playing 4 games. After round robin play, the team ended up in the finals. The outcome was not as they had hoped as they came home with a second place finish. Our final test happened Feb 13 & 14 at the Chetwynd tournament. Not only was this our last opportunity to play in tournament play, it was our final showdown between Fort Nelson and Chetwynd to see who would go to provincial Championships. Our team came ready to play and win, and that we did. The final score was 5 – 1, and secured the Fort Nelson Fury Bantam Rep Team a spot in the Tier 4 Provincial Championships in Chase, BC. We ended up the Chetwynd tournament on a good note also, beating our rivals Fort St. John twice and taking third in the tournament. The Fort Nelson Bantam Rep Team will be heading out March 5 to Chase, BC to start their quest to do well at Provincial Championships. The games start March 7 and run until March 12. The team’s initial goal was to get to Provincials, and they have achieved that goal, job well done. There will be stiff competition, but if the boys know that if the play together, work hard, and stay focused, they can have success at the Provincials. The Bantam Rep team would like to thank all the team staff, parents and families for their support this season. We couldn’t have done it with out you.

RCMP MEDIA RELEASE
ALBERTA - On January 15, 2010 at approximately 7:30 am, Fox Creek RCMP responded to a call involving a tractor-trailer unit that had rolled over while heading eastbound on Simonette Road near Little Smoky, Alberta.
RCMP located the collison scene 60 kilometers west of Highway 43. Investigators believe the driver of the semi was trying to negotiate a turn but was too wide in his approach. As the driver was turning, the middle of his vehicle hit the bridge's side rail causing the vehicle to ride up on the side rail for approximately 15 meters until the vehicle toppled over onto the cab.
The cab portion of the tractor unit was crushed by the weight resulting in the death of the driver.
The identity of the driver, a 42-year-old man from Sylvan Lake, is not being released at this time.
Investigators are asking for anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact Fox Creek RCMP at 780-622-3580
Torch Relay - Fort Nelson 01 Feb 2010.
The Community Task Force Committee for the Fort Nelson Olympic Torch Relay has been working with the Chamber of Commerce to encourage participation from local businesses. The CTF has also been working with the School District towards having students participate in activities leading up to and hopefully during the event.
The time and date of the event was determined well over a year ago by the Vancouver Olympic Committee, and Fort Nelson was informed of when it would take place - in true Northern Spirit, I'm sure we will make the very best of the experience, even if it is in the early morning cold!
The Olympic Torch Relay Event will take place at Art Fraser Park, on February 1, 2010, from 8:00 am. Following the official ceremonies, there will be a community Winter Spirit Carnival, with refreshments, activities, and entertainment, until 11:00 a.m. The official Olympic Torch Route will be published the week leading up to the event, so that people may gather along the route to support the Torchbearers during their portion.
