So my wife had an emergency c-section lastweek. While the baby is doing fine, the momma is being treated like garbage.
In a move to free-up hospital beds, the regional health authority has implemented a plan that sees mothers discharged early, while still recovering from major surgery.
To care for these mothers a cadre of home care workers are tasked with traveling to the homes and tending to things like daily dressing changes. Makes sense. Unless you are from out-of-town; then you have to take a cab to and from the home-care services building, across town and sit and wait your turn to see a nurse....Everyday;missing baby's feedings, not-too-mention the pain of traveling with a gaping stomach wound.
You see, as an non-local resident my wife is entitled to stay with the baby in the newborn intensive care unit, but due to union posturing the home-care nurses are not allowed to deliver care to someone who is residing in the hospital. While the hospital feels compelled to discharge any and all mothers, on paper, to satisfy some silly rules, that leaves my wife without the ability to get a dressing changed, in a hospital that is supposed to serve the entire region.
Last night she phoned me crying that the incision pain was so intense from running all over town, that she felt she needed to take a T-3. This has her so distraught, me as well, that she is trying to give our little girl healthy breast milk, free of narcotics.
I am going to raise-cain over this nonsense, I just thought it might be cathartic to vent a little.

Good to vent, good to expose bureaucratic nonsense.

Ask her doctor about taking Tramacet for the pain instead of codeine. Non-narco and leaves the body quicly. That being said it isnt as effective of a painkiller.
My sis is expecting soon too and was informed there is only going to be the "one doctor" thing in town again.

I think that if you are going to be naked with members of the opposite sex, you can soon expect to be expecting soon....jus sayin.

This is a very distressing situation. My husband made an attempt last year to try and help the young families who need to go out of town for maternity services. He made a motion at a council meeting to secure a house or apartment in Fort St John where our maternity patients could stay while waiting to have their babies. There was no interest from the Mayor or any other councillor as he could not even get a seconder. I realize this could not help in this particular case as it is in P.G. However, most of the women go to F.S.J. This needs to be addressed. Where are the priorities?

We all know where the priorities are. I'd say where but I just can't afford another lawsuit.

Thank-you Kim, for all your help in this matter. Kim spent the better part of the entire day chasing down people all over Northern BC for an explanation.
While I am a new resident to Fort Nelson, and finding myself in this situation is a bit distressing, the concern and exemplary care being demonstrated by Kim Eglinski to resolve this matter, makes me sure I moved to the greatest little town in BC.

One of the guy's i work with wife is a nurse. He doesn't see her much and their family life is non-existent. It is crazy what they go through. It's only going to get worse as we old farts, get older.

Kim made some calls and the situation will not arise for anyone else. Reprimands were made, and now mothers who are not local, are allowed to stay with their babies at University Hospital and receive all the nursing help they need without having to track down a home healthcare nurse.
My little girl (she is 4lbs 7 oz) is very healthy and is going through the preparations to be discharged. I really appreciate the kind words, but most of all I am so grateful that people who don't even know my wife and I, stepped forward to be our advocate.
