Garbage Bins

Fort St John is doing something the public supports wholeheartedly, check this out:

Roll out those garbage bins.
On Wednesday, Fort St. John will begin its new garbage initiative with the new bins that have been distributed to residences around the City.
Residents are allowed to fill the bins with as many bags as they want, as long as the lid shuts.
The bins hold approximately three full garbage bags, but if anyone requires a second bin, Don Demers, the City's director of public works, says they are available at a cost of $75 plus the annual $120 pickup fee.
One new feature of the bins is a barcode that corresponds to a specific address.
The barcodes mean if a bin goes missing and city workers find it elsewhere, it can be returned to its proper address.

I take my garbage to the dump myself. I find it way cheaper to do that. Also, there is no limit for how much I can have, and I don't have to use tags.

What I would love Ft Nelson to have is better recycling.

Wouldn't that be something! I would love to see the town fork out some dough to give everyone trash cans!

I would love to see proper trash cans, I would love more for people to actually use them. What do you mean by better recycling ME?

I love the idea!! I wouldnt mind one bit paying a Annual Fee of $120 and then another fee of $75 just to buy the trash can!! I think it would keep the bears down and away from peoples yards in the fall allowing people to be safer and will also cut down on the trash laying around town and such.

well I know I have about 2 garbage bags a week. and that works out to $104 a year. so as long as its cheaper then that I am for it.
But we desperately need a recycling program.

I would love to see blue box curbside pick up, but that would mean the town would have to foot the bill for that as well.

isn't the dump a contract from the town? (taxpayer $$), and then we have to pay to go to the dump or for curbside pick-up! so we are already paying twice might as well have those bins!

Not willing to pay another red cent for yet another useless thing - private enterprise has this covered already. Use Widesky if you don't want to take your stuff to the dump.

Rocky - Widesky will come to your home and get your garbage. don't matter if they already run the dump. I am sick of people wanting more and more and then my taxes get raised. Private enterprise has this covered already. Don't need government and more taxes b/c some bleeding heart expects government to look after them.

i am willing to pay either in taxes or a bill (not tags) it would be easier for me, i always forget to buy tags. I would also like to see a recycling program and all the bottles and cans that go in the bins that money from the deposits could be used towards the recycling program or to help fund programs in town. Widesky does a good job and i enjoy them and they do a great job.

to NP...Widesky Disposal is contracted by the Municipality to run the dump. That means they are paid by the Town to operate the scale and take the dumpsters that hold your garbage you take there yourself. Garbage pick up is "Private Enterprise". So if you hire them to pick up your garbage it will cost you, every time you take something to the dump its $5.00 minimum. Since Widesky is contracted by the Municipality, you are already paying for it out of your taxes now. Should there be mandatory pickup the cost will probably not be any different and from what I remember, the added tax was very insignificant.

@DENNISM: i ain't willing to pay another red cent in taxes 'cause people are too lazy or too disorganized to buy tags. it's not like widesky is hard to get to. As for the extra cost - you say that now but just like any other tax, it will go up. There is a system in place now and I say don't fix what ain't broke. Let those lazy whiners get with the private enterprise system.

So then Northern Paul... what would you do if widesky didn't pick up your garbage anymore? Hope some other "privately owned" disposal company in Fort Nelson takes over the job?

So Lifer - how about dealing with the here and now. I don't do the hypothetical. We have a system now. Be grateful you don't live is some place where you can't even pay someone to take your trash away. People got too much garbage anyways. Damn waste.

Then they complain they got too many bills - well stop wasting your $$ on crap. Probably gonna have to support them in their old age too b/c they were playing grasshopper with their savings.

So let me ask you this NP...if and when the town implements mandatory pick up and adds the cost to property tax how do you plan on not paying?
And who are the lazy whiners? there are some people not able to take their garbage to the landfill for several reasons. It's really not fair of you to call them all "whiners"

Moneys like the wind man. Cant feel it unless its moving. I agree that you need to have some savings and think about the future but lets not get crazy.

Like this one person I know. They got money (not like you and me money, like "Lets fly to mexico tomrrow for a beer kinda money").

But what do they do? They by jug of orange juice and spilt it in half and mix in the rest water to get 2 jugs of watered down juice?

Life is too short. If your garbage is pissing you off pay someone to take it out. Unless you're like me and dont mind getting your hands dirty once in awhile.

These garbage bins wouldn't matter for the people out of town because they can only get dumpster services. they pay the same amount all year even though it's only every other week in the winter. If they are going to charge the same through out the year the service provided should stay the same.

@DENNISM: so what you saying - "if and when" - is the town gonna be so stupid as to take business away from a private enterprise and take on all the headaches of garbage collection 52 weeks of the year just b/c some whiners can't get their act together and buy tags??

I hope the Council handles this better than ole Gordo and the HST or that Escort Bylaw 'cause I haven't heard a word from Council about this.

btw - I didn't call them all "whiners" - I said "LAZY" whiners. We got this one friend hitting 80 who would run circles around these people who can't get it to gether to buy a tag.

No NP the town would not be stupid and take business away, they would still contract out, no different than now only that the contract would become more lucrative. Consider yourselves lucky in the garbage area, you don't have the hassles of "recycle" and what the rest of us have to do for garbage collection. That's off topic but anyway a consistant and efficient garbage collection in Fort Nelson needs to be implemented for safety and health reasons. Safety from bears and health by stopping the "illegal" dumping of garbage.

I want it to stay as it is myself. I have a safe area to store my garbage then once a week I take it to the dump for only $5. I'm not sure what wide sky charges...but I am sure that it is more than $20 a month. I see it just like NP....if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Northern Paul I think you need to chill out a little bit... first off who said it was going to happen?? All ken asked was what people thought of it so why the hell did you bring council into it?? Another thing wide sky would be the people selling the garbage bins and such not the flippin town. It was something the town of FSJ has decided to do so Mr. Johnson was curious of what the people of Fort Nelson thought of it. What is wrong with you?? Every time you seem to come on here it’s to complain about one thing or another and there’s no need for it. You’re not even giving you opinion you are pretty much saying that the garbage bins will be sold from the town when there was not even a mention of it... Just give it up!!!!

@ Brown Sugar....I have a garage. I think the people who think leaving their garbage in cans is enough are wrong. Build a small shed or something. My neighbour had garbage all over their lawn this morning because they figure garbage cans were enough.

system ain't broke - don't fix it you nar do gooders.

@ MotherEarth.... it is because of people like you that choose to "store" their garbage until they have a heaping truck load just so they can take it to the dump for 5 bucks instead of having it picked up weekly that we have hungry bears walking around the residential areas of town. it doesn't matter if you have it in your garage and spray febreeze every other day, a bear is gonna smell it and come check it out. Maybe your garage is secure and the bears can't get in, fair enough. But he'll just go and check out your nabors yard where they have little kids or pets playing outside everyday. Maybe you should think about that next time you take a bag out to your garage.

@Lifer:

no you are absolutely wrong. Honestly I find it very hard to believe that Mr Bear can smell my garbage that is locked in bins inside my garage. What Mr Bear smells is my neighbors garbage that is stored outside in their bins with no lids. Get your facts straight buddy before you go spitting words about neighbors kids and pets.

I am the one who goes out and picks the berries off my trees so bears aren't attracted and I clean my BBQ very well. How is my taking the garbage to the dump EVERY Saturday...any different then the town pick up that is only once a week? Honestly Lifer..you are starting an argument over nothing.

@ MotherEarth... I just want to clarify that I do not want to start any argument, this is MY OPINION, I said it is because of people LIKE YOU storing their garbage that attracts bears, You are the one who stated "I have a safe area to store my garbage then once a week I take it to the dump for only $5" Not everyone who "stores" their garbage takes it to the dump religiously.

@DENNISM: a two year old would have come up with a better response than you. That you have to actually say I know better than you is ..... desparate.

Bottom line dude is you don't live here so it really don't matter what you know or don't know. No vote, no voice. Keep your nose out of my taxes. Ya don't see me butting into your local taxes.

And, that's just kinda creepy that you post about local matters when you ain't a local. Get out much?

NP NP NP I am not a local ...NOW. I lived in Ft Nelson up until April of this year and I have 2 daughters who still reside there. Now I paid taxes up to April 30th, I think that entitles me to have a say in one quarter of the tax issues for the town...I had my say and I'll say more if I wish and there is nothing you can do about it. Why can't you have a discussion with anyone without getting so hostile? And I wasn't saying I know better than you, I am saying I know how the local gov't works, I worked for them for 20 years.
