Just curious. I made a purchase at a local business awhile back and was charged an extra 50 cents to purchase using my debit card. I have also come across this in the city a few times.
Is this an acceptable business practice?

I've had it happen lots. I don't think it should be acceptable, but then I am not a business owner. I know when my Sister owned her store she had a $5.00 limit, anything under $5 you had to pay cash. ---------- “Secrets are made to be found out with time.”

$5 limit makes sense but having to pay to use debit??? I'm not a big fan of debit anyway but I can guarentee I'd avoid shopping at those places as much as possible! Seems kinda dishonest in a way if you ask me

I got the same thing now that shaw has bought starchoice or whatever. I order a pay per view and it the automated voice says "you have selected *event* at a cost of $49.99 (and this this new voice comes on "plus one dollar service charge)"
Never used to be like that. Why the hell am I getting dinged a service charge for using the automated service? If a ppv does 600'000 buys thats a lotta of $1 service charges.
Dont get me wrong. I'm gonna pay it. I'm not gonna go without seeing the "All Jello Olympics".

I have always been told about it before I use my debit card. In some cases there is a sticker attached to the pin pad.

Speaking of the new chip debit cards. People keep handing them to me. A guy just did it 5 mins ago and I said "I dont want that" and he was stumped. "You do all the work now" I said.
Also the people that are pissed as hell about having another 4 digits to remember on their credit cards. Its 4 numbers??
Little box?? Whazzat?
Never mind. I tried looking up and to the left a half inch and found it.

Use the same four numbers for everything. Bank tells you not to do it but life is too short to remember a gazillion passwords. If someone every figured out my password I would be hooped. Pretty much would have access to my entire life.

my understanding is the business's are charged a fee for every transaction, that's why some places i have been tack on a fee for credit card payment, though (not here that i recall).

When I was in Europe a few years ago, In Holland American Express was not accepted at many hotels because of a 3% fee. Visa only cost the retailers 1.5%. ---------- Obvious suffering makes a public display of our mental inability.

On another note, Bell Mobility charges me $2.00 for the privilege of presenting me with my bill.
But I don't mind, as the Bell is such a pleasant company to deal with and the service is so great. Almost as great as Northwestel.
Now pardon me while I throw up.

I can understand not wanting to accept debit/credit on some purchases. On government items such as hunting licences and lottery tickets, the business only gets 1% of the sale. If you pay with debit/cc, that business just lost money on the sale. Still, most businesses up here accept them w/out an extra charge.

What is NWTel's excuse for us not having 911 here? Even towns of 500 in the middle of nowhere down south have it. We spend enough with NWTel and their monopoly, it's time they improve our services.

Debit is the way to go, however businesses should be savy to deal with the monthly banking fees and have enough margin built into other pricing.

911!!! Not impossible, but we will have to change our numbering system in the municipality "town".
Each civic address must be unique.
Cannot have 5211 on every block in town

I use cash most times. I find it helps me keep better track of my finances and I have more to put into savings. I hate bank fees. It's just money you are giving away.
