Psychiatric Service Dogs

Watched a CBC News report last night involving a U.S. soldier who sufferes from sever PTSD and his relationship with his donated Psychiatric Service Dog named Meagan.

I know Service dogs exist, for a variety of different reasons but this surprised me. It was a great story.

This dog is trained to recognize if the Soldier is dreaming at night - it gently wakes him up. Same for sleep walking.

Also on the command "watch my back" the dog turns around and watches behind the soldier. As well on another command that I missed the dog will sit right in front of the standing soldier to prevent people from entering what he calls "his personal space".

If the soldier feels anxiety about a certain area that he is in he will command the dog to scope out the area and if the dog is relaxed from sensing no danger then the soldier can relax just by reading the dogs body language.

Might seem a boring subject for some but I found it very interesting. In the soldiers own words "this dog has given me my life back".

Canadian Governments take on this "a wait and see attitude".

The Canadian governments take on everything is a "wait and see attitude"
As an ex-soldier who served 12 years and suffered near critical injuries in the middle-east, I am discusted at how veterens affairs and the government take a penny pinching attitude toward looking after it's veterens....it's really fricking gross.

I have to say that I was a bit disapointed that the Canadian Gov't does not see the benefit to this compared to the United States.

While I understand there is a cost associated with this program it can't possibly out-weigh giving someone who has served and protected the rest of us their life back.

The other interesting side story to this one - is that these service dogs are trained by a program called "Dogs behind Bars". Individuals incarcerated in prison are the ones that are training these service dogs. Kind of thought that was an interesting concept too.

Speaking of Penny-Pinching. Earlier this year I read a book written by Rick Hillier, Former Chief of Defence Staff-Canadian Forces.

Its and excellent read and certainly gives you a new appreciation for the ins and outs of our forces. His no holdes barred approach opens a persons eyes.

Yes, it's a crime how those affected by PTSD are treated...

Some people get PTSD from violence of the RCMP...they then are further victimized by the RCMP by making a complaint about the violence

No, I don't hate...rather I am thankful for the education slammed to me about the role of the RCMP in our society and what the Charter of Rights and Freedoms really means. Glad to have met some humane people who were a lot more powerful than the RCMP who supported me and assisted me to recover from it all.

All I wanted was a dog that can fetch beer. I ended being a long term service care provider for an orange cat?
