Tipping For Bad Service

Out of curiosity, who else here tips well even if the service is bad? I tend to simply because it's more likely you will have that server again and again and you don't want service to get even worse.

No guy. If the service blows then dont tip. As long as its a service and not a food related issue. The waitress has no control over junk food.

Now Im somewhat conflicted because I have never not tipped a stripper and I've had a few "less than tip worthy dancer ply their trade"

Also why dont you tip fast food places? They pretty much do the exact same thing way faster for more customers and make less money?

Welcome to the boards though! My tip is usually 15%.

If I have bad service, I do not tip. It's also months befor I'll return to the same restaurant again. I also regularly give tips for take out. There has been a few occassions where I've walked out befor receiving my meal if the service is particularly bad.

Thanks for the welcome.

My problem is I eat out often and with a rather limited selection of places to go I find myself afraid to burn bridges.

As for fast food, I think the reason you don't tip there is because it would have to be split between so many people, so it would barely be a tip unless it was common place, which kind of raises the prices so fast food seems that much less desirable.

Catch more flies with honey than vinegar I find. In a small town, better to protect those bridges than burn them. I have walked out recently - waitress was too busy talking up the young fellas rather than the one with cash. Her lose.

What do you mean "split the tip"? In the few bars and hotels where I have worked (both union and non union) the servers didnt have to share their tips with the kitchen staff. I think it was beacuase they cooks were paid slightly higher?

This was a ways back though. I'm still saying if the service was crap then dont feel obligated to part with your money because its "custom".

Julian:Takes money to make money Rick.

Ricky:No, you get your money and you keep it. Thats how you make money.

I always make an effort to try and understand the reason for the less than desirable service. Is it because of a problem with equipment, supply, or maybe a lack of staff?
If it is because they are to busy chatting with friends or boys to care about the job, than the tip is going to be minimal. Great service always garners a healthy tip from me.

When we go out, we start the tip at a base line, if service is better than expected they get a bigger tip, if it was worse then we tip less. Only once did I leave a handful of pennies.

the restaurants here in town HAVE to share tips with hostesses and kitchen. it is built right into the system. even if they don't get a single tip that night it will come out of their pocket.

I will tip dependent on the level of service that I receive (usually well above the 15%).

However, if I get poor service, and it has to be pretty bad, then I will not tip at all. If you get poor service, and you tip, then you are essentially telling the server that it is okay for him/her to treat the next customers the same way.

I'm really a sucker when it comes to this. Even if the service is the craps I will tip them. It may not be much but something inside just doesn't allow me to give them nothing. Right or wrong.
When the service is great, I will tip nicely. I tipped a lady $60.00 on a $100.00 tab a while ago.
I thought the service was that good...

Do you tip the cashiers at overwaitea? They start at a pretty low wage.
For me a tip only comes if I get over and above the service that they are PAID to do.

I just don't agree that really poor service should be rewarded. Sends the wrong message.

This spam prevention thing is starting to really irk me.

It sucks because now our works web filters detect this sight under "chat" and block it from our computers.

What about when the dominoes kid delivers and you pay debit? It has the "tip" option there? I usually tip the delivery guy but usually just with cash.

Did they go over and above what thier job pays them to do??? If so tip, if not don't tip. For all you know they could have left the kitchen 30 minutes before they got to your house but had to stop and chat to a buddy?

This is the one that kills me. When staying at a hotel and you order room service. In some cases the menu in your room indicates that a gratuity will be added to your bill. I have been caught twice on this. They - by way of elevator deliver to my room, I tip in cash, but charge the meal to my room. Then when I check out I notice that they have added the gratuity to my room as well.

Usual tip for me is about 15%.

I do not tip for bad service. If the food is bad it is not the waitresses fault. I agree that there is a difference. However, I have had crappy service and crappy food so I left complaining to the lady at the till because between the waitress and the cook decided to saturate my food with salt after sending it back twice. Their fault the food was crappy and cold...not mine for sending it back. A little local place...and haven't been back since and won't go back there either.

well as a person who has worked in the service industry in town.. as a server.. my philosophy has always been simple.. it is nice to get one but i never expect one... times are tough.. i have given back many quarters..lol.. now with that in mind.. if the customer is being a douche and not tipping, it sometimes takes a little longer to get your order in..lol...

I read somewhere that the origin of tipping goes back to Roman times where it literally meant "To Give" but then I heard in the 18th century that the tip was given before being seated and stood for "To Insure Promptness"

I'm making a tip cup at work tomorrow. 95% of my work load comes from companies with accounts who PO all their materials so no cash changes hands at all.

Well now that I type it out it seems like an insane idea.

Im still gonna do it.

On a side note I've found that if you type the sperm prevention code first before your post it seems to be less of a pain in the arse.

Customer: Whats this? A tip cup?

Me: Yup

Customer: Here's a tip! Get a job and quit looking for freebies!

Me: Uhh okay? What are you looking for?

Customer: I'm looking for some house wire and a few breakers but I want a good price because I havent had a lot of work because of all the rain in the bush.

Me: Wow.

Also its been a non-stop battle to stop a select group of customers from defacing my buisness cards. One time a guy took one and wrote beside my name "supports pedophillia."

I didnt see it and a young lady comes into the store looking for a light fixture.

Her: Hey, someone wrote on your card (this was when I still kept them on the counter, like a normal person.)

I glance at it and see the pedophile comment and say "Holy shit I'm sorry some of the electricians like to screw around with my stuff."

She goes "Thats okay. Whats pedophillia?"
"Are you serious?" I say and she says "Ya"

What the hell am I supposed to say? I tell her "Well its not good"

My spam code was mrH88p (Mister Happy maybe?)

Wow icetitan that's actually pretty awesome! Some people really need to grow up though. I always wondered what would happen if more retail places had tip option on their debit. I would probably get suckered into a lot of tips as long as the staff was polite and attempted to be helpful.
