Facebook will roll out a new location-based service in April. The new service means that Facebook's 400 million plus users will be able to see the locations of their friends in addition to their status updates. The New York Times, citing people familiar with the company's plans, said Facebook will provide its own service direct to its users and will also open up its Application Programming Interface (API) to other developers so that users of those services can share their location with their Facebook friends.

So this is similar to say, Google Earth? If so, I don't really see the point. If one were so inclined to determine the exact location of a friend why not just look at a map, or use Google Earth? Seems like a waste of money to me, however if they're planning to sell a ton of advertising on the application itself then I suppose it's smart on their behalf.
