Efforts are being made in the U.S. to add healthier options to school lunches, such as salads and whole grain bread instead of hot dogs and burgers, it's probably no surprise to learn that food-centric France is way ahead of us. Not only do school kids get healthy lunches from a well-funded program, they get sit-down, five-course meals. Reporter Vivienne Walt, who's currently living in Paris, writes about the French school lunches in this week's Time magazine, saying that her pre-schooler's lunch, like that of all school children in France, includes an hors d'oeuvre, salad, main course, cheese plate and dessert, and that the week's menus are posted on a wall outside every school in the country, with no meal repeated over the 32 days in a single period. As for snack and soda machines, they aren't allowed in school buildings.
KJ: Anyone know what the menu looks like in our schools? Is it improving? or is it still Pop and french fries?

When I was in junior high school, the cafeteria was our favorite place cause you could chow down on fries and gravy, onion rings, coke, hamburgers and hotdogs and sometimes lasagna! We loved it but looking back, it really wasn't the best stuff. I hope the schools are trying to improve things.

My home town highschool was too small for a cafeteria, we had a canteen lol. College though had a cafeteria that tried to make healthy meals. It had a culinary course there and the students had to cook in the caf for part of their course. They also had a dining room where you could book a table for special meals. It was pretty damn good.

I used to work in the cafeteria at FNSS! Quite a fun job - you really got to know the kids! The menu was varied - always fresh homemade soup and sandwiches everyday as well as salads (veg and fruit!). Of course there were hot dogs but there was always the choice to eat healthier or not! This was a few years ago so not sure what changes there are now. I believe that you can't make someone eat healthy no more than you can make them quit smoking!
