How wonderful that was! Yes, Peter better be on his toes with this one! Kudos to all the volunteers who put off such a wonderful weekend! Another Fort Nelson Proud moment!!
As an animal activist I'm a upset how they have the squirrel skinning contest. It's very inhumane. Children shouldn't see that I hope none go out this Summer and decided to do some practicing for next year. And it definately should not be in the newspaper. PETA would be very pissed!
Yes cause that's what the kids have been doing around here for years and years, skinning squirrels in the summer cause they saw it at Rendezvous. Wonder if they will go rob the banks too. ---------- DAF
me123, this is a scary town to be an animal rights activist in, believe me, I've tried. When I moved back here after living in a larger centre for several years, the hunting culture really put me off. Going into someone's home and seeing animal heads and skins on the wall was like walking into a murder scene, it really bothered me. And if I said anything at all, I would get made fun of, like you did here, so I just had to keep my mouth shut. The thing is, this stuff is so engrained into the history and culture here that it is not only acceptable, but celebrated, and there's little that you can do. It was hard for me to adapt, but it's something that has to be done to live in this town. I commend you for expressing yourself about it. I know how frustrating it is to have your beliefs made into a joke. Kudos for bringing the topic to light.
Mine wasn't a joke at being an animal activist. it was a comment about assuming our children are all going to start skinning squirrels because they saw it at rendezvous. That is a bit out there. ---------- Life is tough ...It's even tougher if you're stupid.........
Correct me if I am wrong. Skinning a dead squirel is inhumane?
PETA is not welcome in this town. When a black bear comes into a yard in town and mauls the neighbors dog or worse someone's child, where is PETA?
Ask Paul Watson about his welcome when he came into this town to protest the wolf kill program.
We live on the edge of the bush, many of us make our livings from the bush, from harvesting legal animals in a sustainable and humane manner. I am proud to teach this to my children. I am even more proud to take them to heritage days and Rendevous and various native cultural events and let them hear from the elders how things have been done, how things have changed, and how things are better or worse.
As an animal activist, why don't you organize a show or event demonstrating your beliefs, and I will be there to respect your beliefs even if I do not agree with your opinion. ---------- Trapper
