It's not "thy sons command" that bothers me. Gender neutrality...meh. I would take out the "God keep our land" part. Keep it religion neutral maybe?

I say don't change it a bit, and bring it back into our schools...we were proud to sing it when we were winning medal, lets stay proud!

Good point about keeping it neutral lovelymiss, looks like a double standard to me. I say screw the whole thing and just make "Takin Care of Business" our new national anthem. Get to the workin over time part!

Ya I remember way back then. I can recall having to say The Lord's Prayer each morning too. Glad they don't do that anymore!

Whats it going to be now, thy kids command? Dam kids demand enough now, they don't need anything else that makes them think they can command more. LOL

I went to a wedding about 12 years ago. My girlfriend showed me the way to the hall where the wedding was taking place. It was the Elks hall in Prince George. When I walked in, I said...why are they covering up the Canadian Flags?
My girlfriend said..."the bride doesn't want those in her pictures"
I left.

Heres what I don't get and that is why would they choose such a location if they know that there is things such as the canadian flag. Just covering it up is nothing but disrespecful not only to the place that is renting but to our country, why couldn't they take pictures in a different spot especially how decorations stand out more than anything else..

I understand both sides of the fence...thats why I won't have my wedding anywhere things like that may get in the way. I wouldn't cover it up, if I had to I would take it down...until we were done with the space.

I wanted to go with the Backroads, just the color of the hall is tacky next to my colors and the dartboards (very tacky). It's a girl's wedding day, something they have been dreaming of all of their lives and a flag and elk just don't fall in that line, not for me anyway.

Do you think that I'm 21 cause this stuff matters to me? Or do you think I'm 21 cause the flag doesn't seem that important to me, cause I don't want it in my wedding pictures?

I do have to comment on this, the following is something I HAVE RESERCHED tonight:

Jean and her family hail from Haiti; she was born and raised in Port-au-Prince,[1] spending summers and weekends in Jacmel, her mother's hometown.[2] With her family, Jean fled Haiti in 1968 to escape the regime of dictator François Duvalier — who had tortured Jean's philosopher father and separated him from his family for more than 30 years — and, upon arrival in Canada, the family settled at Thetford Mines, Quebec.[3]

Between 1867 and 1952, all Governors General were born beyond Canada's borders and were members of the Peerage; these viceroys spent a relatively limited time in Canada, but their travel schedules were so extensive that they could "learn more about Canada in five years than many Canadians in a lifetime."[22] However, even though prior to the implementation of the Canadian Citizenship Act in 1947 all Canadian nationals were as equally British subjects as their British counterparts, the idea of Canadian-born persons being appointed Governor General was raised as early as 1919, when, at the Paris Peace Conference, Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden consulted with Prime Minister of South Africa Louis Botha, and the two agreed that the viceregal appointees should be long-term residents of their respective Dominions.[23] Calls for just such an individual to be made viceroy came again in the late 1930s,[24] but it was not until Vincent Massey's appointment by King George VI in 1952 that the position was filled by a Canadian-born individual; this practice continued until 1999, when the Queen commissioned as her representative Adrienne Clarkson, a Hong Kong-born refugee to Canada. Moreover, the practice of alternating between anglophone and francophone Canadians was instituted with the appointment of Georges Vanier, a francophone who succeeded the anglophone Massey. All persons whose names are put forward to the Queen for approval must first undergo background checks by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.[25][26]

Although required by the tenets of constitutional monarchy to be nonpartisan while in office, Governors General were frequently former politicians; a number held seats in the House of Lords by virtue of their inclusion in the Peerage. Clarkson was the first Governor General in Canadian history without either a political or military background, as well as the first Asian-Canadian and the second woman, following on Jeanne Sauvé. The third woman to hold this position was also the first Caribbean-Canadian Governor General, Michaëlle Jean.

There has been, from time to time, proposals put forward for modifications to the selection process of the Governor General. Most recently, the group Citizens for a Canadian Republic has advocated the election of the nominee to the Queen by either popular or parliamentary vote;[27] a proposal echoed by Adrienne Clarkson, who called for the Prime Minister's choice to not only be vetted by a parliamentary committee, in a similar format to Congressional confirmation hearings in the United States,[28][29] but also submit to a televised quiz on Canadiana.[30] Constitutional scholars, editorial boards, and the Monarchist League of Canada have argued against any such constitutional tinkering with the viceregal appointment process, stating that the position being "not elected is an asset, not a handicap," and that an election would undermine the impartiality necessary to the proper functioning of the Governor General.[31]

Now, my beef is, someone whom is not born in Canada, and is gift wraped the governor generals position and now she wants to change the National Anthem I have grown up with, piss off, leave it the way it is, If they change it, I shit you not, I will move to another country in which has balls to stand up to people like this who think its a problem the way the Anthem sounds.

PS, Just visiting today

I wasn't too happy when they changed it the first time. As I recall I was at a high school function and I realized that the kids were singing a different verse. When questioning my kids they told me that it was the "new words".
This time I won't be caught off guard with the grandkids. Because no offence but I sure have got some pretty good "heads up" about quite a few topics on this blog 8-)

I remember being invited to the Seattle Golden gloves. As a tribute to us as reps. of Canada, there in the king dome the americans decided to play the Canadian National Anthem.

We all stood up, bowed our heads and the song "God save the Queen" was played.

Only us canadians even knew what was wrong.

We did set them straight, and half way through the second day, they apologized and played our national anthem.

I didn't like it when they changed it the first time, and don't like that they are thinking about changing it again. I still catch myself sometimes singing the old version.

Funy thing is if you ask 5 people what "thy sons command" actually means you will probably get 5 different answers. The anthem, and its words, mean something different to different people.

I think our Government has far bigger things to worry about right now and perhaps they should be focusing their energy on those things instead.

I was doing some searching and it turns out there was a version of Oh Canada that is pre 1927 (the current version)that was more gender neutral... not that i think we should change it at all... but it will be a hot topic.. I thnk it is more of a fluff piece to cover up for federal budget day!!! What better way to mask a federal budget that I can only immagine that is not going to be favourable, by getting people all fired up over our song, that we heard many times over the past month..

I like our anthem and think the "gender neutral" stuff is crap but I can get the angle that they would want to change it back to the original poem written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier that was written in 1880. The orginal poem written by the Quebec judge is:

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love thou dost in us command.
We see thee rising fair, dear land,
The True North, strong and free;
And stand on guard, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.

Refrain
O Canada! O Canada!
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western Sea,
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!

Refrain
O Canada! O Canada! etc.

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise,
To keep thee steadfast through the years
From East to Western Sea,
Our own beloved native land!
Our True North, strong and free!

Refrain
O Canada! O Canada! etc.

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our dominion within thy loving care;
Help us to find, O God, in thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the Better Day,
We ever stand on guard.

Refrain
O Canada! O Canada! etc

As you can see, True patriot love in all thy sons command should actually be True patriot love thou dost in us command. I'm ok with this change but do think that parliament has more important stuff to worry about.

Final word?

CANADA'S NATIONAL ANTHEM WON'T GET PC MAKEOVER: Canada has dropped the idea of giving its national anthem, "O Canada," a politically correct makeover in which the line, "True patriot love in all they sons' command" would have been changed to be inclusive of women. Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government had proposed discussing making a change to the anthem, but Canadians forcefully spoke out against it, invoking tradition and symbols as they complained on radio and TV shows. Many were also unhappy that the idea was proposed during the same week that the Vancouver Winter Olympics ended, when Canada's anthem was heard for each of the country's 14 gold medal winners. Harper's spokesman said, "We offered to hear from Canadians on this issue and they have already spoken loud and clear."

I am pretty sure it was a fluff piece to take the attention off something else the government has done or wanted to do.. Anytime there is big headlines like that the government always takes advantage of the publicity to sneak something in... my guess probrably a pay raise to coenside with paroguing parlament for the second time in a year... things that make you MMMMM???
