Ha......both wrong. We had a wiener roast on the wood stove in the basement, was ready to put some Kraft dinner on just before the power came on.

That outage was a bit long wasn't it? 5.5 hours...
I guess we do not have a back up power system? That was one hell of a "switch" problem...

Same as Ken. Water running fine. Not really cold enough to freeze anything so you might have a snafu going on.

I guess we should be thanking our lucky stars (or BC Hydro should) that our temperature was warmer than normal or we all would have had many, many problems associated with not having power for over 5 hours.

Does the generating station down at Spectra only generate power for thie usage? Why could it not be used as back up for the town. If it had been 40 below there would have been major issues.

Pretty sure its for their own use. Im not sure if its tied in to the towns power grid. I can most likley find out for sure tomorrow.

Imagine it went out during the hockey game, there would be alot of angry people out there. I thought it was kinda funny how everyone was just cruising around during the power outage.

Spectra supplies the BC Hydro Generating Plant "black start power" to start their plant out at Mile 285, during an emergency, as they did during the power outage. Spectra does not make enough power to supply the entire town. Black start power is bascially start up power until they are able to generate their own.

The town of Fort Nelson is supplied their power by BC Hydro at the plant beside Spectra. Fort Nelson is not on the main BC Hydro grid. Alberta is the backup power supply for Fort Nelson when the BC Hydro plant goes down. The issue in Alberta knocked the BC Hydro plant out and since the problem started in Alberta, they couldn't act as back up power.

I think it is very dangerous to take the power supply for granted here. There are a lot of things that can take out the power supply that are beyond BC Hydro's control. It was very lucky that the weather was so mild. I am betting a lot more people and businesses will be looking into buying generators.
